The short answer is that we have "ties" to Shelby County, Alabama (pun intended), and we like how it sounds. The longer answer is that Steve's mom, aka Grandma Patsy (an avid crocheter of baby blankets), grew up in Shelby County, Alabama. We have lots of family there and the people and place are near and dear to our hearts. Steve and Jill have dreamed of opening up a small storefront selling yarn and guitars and calling it "Strings". While visiting family in Shelby County, Steve commented that if we opened the shop there, we could call it Shelby Strings. While we aren't moving to Alabama and opening a storefront, we decided we liked that name and decided to go for it.
