About Us

Shelby Strings is a family indie yarn dyeing company based in Ankeny, Iowa. Our mission is to create small batch, experimental colorways for the fiber community. Shelby Strings consists of Steve and Zoe who do the dyeing, Alix who does test knitting, and Jill who keeps the operation running smoothly.

The Noble Family

Steve

Steve plays guitar, sells motorcycles, and dyes yarn. His creativity was inspired by his Johnston High School art teacher Mr. Weiss who encouraged him to study at Iowa State's College of Design. Steve's creativity is seen in his music, yarn colorways, woodworking, and cooking.

Jill

Jill manages the microbiology and anatomic pathology departments in a local hospital lab, knits, makes stitch markers, and manages this fun company. One of her earliest memories is watching her mom (Grandma Joyce) knit.

Zoe

Zoe is a paralegal, embroiders jewelry (check out www.angrygirlart.com), dyes yarn, and has been knitting since she was five. She gets her keen eye for color and design from her father.

Alix

Alix is a software engineering student at Iowa State, a clarinet player in the marching band, and begged to learn to knit at four years old. Little Alix's first comment was, "I thought this would be harder."
